Long ago, there was a boy named John.

John was special.

His father was a priest, which meant he worked in God’s house, the temple.

Many people thought John would grow up to work there too, just like his father.

But God had a different plan for John.

God Calls John

John was filled with the Holy Spirit when he was very young, so he could hear God talking to him from the time he was a child.

He knew God wanted him to do something special with his life.

When John got a bit older, God spoke to him one day.

God said,
“I want you to tell people to repent.”

🤔 What does repent mean?

Repent means to turn away from your sinful and disobedient ways and turn to God by obeying him in everything that we do everyday.

God wanted John to preach—not in a busy town—but in the wilderness, far away from the temple.

That was surprising! (🤔 WHY is that? )

A Strange Place and Strange Clothes

John lived in the wilderness.

🤔 WHAT IS A WILDERNESS?

A wilderness is a big, wild place where no one lives and people hardly visit. Only some animals and sometimes wild plants. A desert is a type of wilderness but there are other types of wilderness.

🤔 DOES JAMAICA HAVE a wilderness?

He wore rough clothes made of camel hair, with a leather belt around his waist.

He ate locusts and wild honey for his food.

Many people thought John looked strange.

Some people laughed at him.

Some people did not understand him.

But John did not stop. He obeyed God anyway.

John’s Important Message

John’s message was simple.

REPENT! “Turn away from your sins and turn to God!"

He told the people that God is sending someone special soon to show them how to enter God’s kingdom”

John was talking about Jesus!

Even though John did not have many friends, he was happy because he was doing what God asked him to do.

🤔 What This Story Teaches Us??

John could have chosen an easy life.

He could have stayed in the temple.

But he chose to obey God, even when it was hard.

💛 Sometimes obeying God means:

Being different

Standing alone

Not being popular

But obeying God is always the right choice.
