Jesus and His 12 disciples gathered around a large feasting table. The room was lively as they talked about all the amazing things they had seen Jesus do.

But one disciple was not enjoying the meal the same way as the others.

Some important religious leaders had offered Judas money if he helped them arrest Jesus. So while the other disciples listened to Jesus, Judas kept thinking about the reward that might be waiting for him.

Jesus knew exactly what was happening, but he already decided to give up his life as a ransom for everyone who wanted eternal life.

As they ate, Jesus suddenly said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.”

The room became quiet.

The disciples looked at one another in surprise.

“Surely not me, Lord?” asked one disciple.

“Not me?” asked another.

One by one they asked Jesus the same question.

Judas asked too, “Surely not me, Teacher?”

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

Jesus was not angry. He was sad.

He knew that Judas could still choose to trust him, but greed was pulling Judas’ heart in the wrong direction.

Jesus said, “The person who dips his hands in the bowl with me is the one”.

And not too long after, he and Judas reached for a loaf at the same time. Only the two men realized what had happened so Judas got up and hurried out of the room.

Then Satan entered his heart.

The other disciples chose to keep following Jesus.

Judas chose to listen to his greed instead.

Money itself is not bad, but when we love money more than we love God, it can lead us away from what is right.

Jesus wants our hearts to belong to Him.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

Lesson for Children

Judas let the thought of getting money become more important than following Jesus. When we put God first, He helps us make good choices. Jesus sees our hearts and wants us to choose His way every day.
